Museum kicks off spring with a movie that captures filming firsts beginning Friday
DAVENPORT, Iowa (March 22, 2018) — Families hoping to visit the ocean this spring don’t have to drive far, as the Putnam opens the newest “Oceans” documentary while at the same time formally launching its new 3D system in the museum’s Giant Screen Theater.
“Oceans: Our Blue Planet 3D” premieres Friday with showings at 11:15 a.m. and 4:15 p.m. at the Putnam Museum and Science Center.
Produced by BBC Earth, “Oceans” takes viewers on a global expedition from the coastal shallows to deeper, more mysterious worlds and uncovers the untold stories of the oceans’ most astonishing creatures.
Narrated by Academy Award-winning actress Kate Winslet, the new “Oceans” documentary captures filming firsts, including professional footage of rarely observed animal behavior and deep-sea volcanic activity.
“This new 3D system is so sharp and dramatic, you’ll feel like you need to towel off after seeing ‘Oceans,’” said Kim Findlay, president and CEO of the Putnam. “We have seen more guests reaching out, trying to touch things because they appear to be right in front of them, with the 3D system now more than ever!”
“Oceans” is the first film to debut incorporating the theater’s new 3D system, updated to allow more light output from the projector.
The result has been stunning, said Sharon Henkel, theater lead at the museum. The higher light output and switch to circular polarization allow for a more realistic depth to images, she said.
Adult tickets to “Oceans” are $8.50, youth tickets $7 and senior/military/college student tickets $7.50. Putnam members save $1 on the price of tickets.
Following the premiere, showings of “Oceans” will continue this weekend and through April. For more “Oceans” show times, visit http://putnam.org/Movies/Showtimes.
