DAVENPORT, IA — Rosecrance will cohost a public town hall meeting with several treatment organizations, including the Center for Alcohol and Drug Services and Unity Pointe, to raise awareness on Prescription Drug Abuse and the Opioid Epidemic. The event will be held Wednesday, April 11, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the Mississippi Bend Area Education Agency (729 21st St, Bettendorf, IA) in the Bettendorf Clinton/Jackson Room.

The town hall meeting is free, open to the public and will feature a panel of skilled community leaders from law enforcement, medical professionals, and substance abuse experts, including— Rosecrance Regional Manager Austin Gross who will discuss treatment options. Resource tables to connect audience members with information and education on prevention, and treatment opportunities will also be on hand.

Ninety one individuals die every day from an opioid overdose and only 1 in 5 people who currently need treatment for opioid use disorders are receiving it. Studies show that 8 out of 10 people who start using heroin abused painkillers first.

“At Rosecrance, we witness the severe effects of prescription drugs and opioids on clients firsthand,” says Rosecrance Regional Manager Austin Gross. “Addiction doesn’t discriminate and it is important that we call attention to the many faces it wears.”

Gross adds, “But, this cannot be merely a conversation anymore. We must take steps towards change before this epidemic has the opportunity to turn into a pandemic.”

The town hall meeting will begin with an overview by Strategic Prevention Framework Rx Coordinator, Zandra Rodriguez, followed by a call to action and the expert panel discussion.

This meeting will be in conjunction with the Scott County Prescription Drugs Advisory Council, with funding provided by the Iowa Department of Public Health – Strategic Prevention Framework for Prescription Drugs grant and the State Targeted Response grant.
