Davenport Junior Theatre (DJT) is in the midst of launching its 67th season.  With over 475 registrations in the fall theatre and dance programs, DJT now turns its sights to launching its all student production of Charlotte’s Web on the mainstage.
“The story of Charlotte's Web is incredibly important,” said the show’s director, Calvin Vo. “From this story we all learn about the importance of friendships and how they can change our lives, the virtue of advocacy and compassion towards those in need, and the value of each person's unique perspective and identity.”
“It’s a story about how one person can make a difference in another person’s life,” added Croix Baker, the 13 year old student actor playing Wilbur. “I like Wilbur because of his personality.  He is energetic and is really nice to everybody and cares for his friends deeply.”
Charlotte’s Web involves over 40 students from 11 different area cities and towns. The kids range in age from 9 - 17 and are actors, crew members, tech board operators, front-of-house team members and more.  Local professional theatre artists work alongside the kids to create a dynamic theatre experience while training kids in theatrical production.
The legacy of the Junior Theatre experience runs deep.  DJT’s current production manager and lighting designer for Charlotte’s Web, Zachary Meyer, has a long history with this production. Meyer first performed as a student in this show seven and a half years ago.  Since then, Meyer went on to get his bachelors in theatre from Saint Ambrose University and returned on staff at Junior Theatre.
“What’s special about revisiting the show is getting to experience it from the design and production side, watching the students grow, and seeing students get the chance to be involved in the technical elements of theatre like I was,” said Meyer.  “Seven and a half years ago I got to be in the show and be an assistant lighting designer. Now I get to be the lighting designer and production manager.  This show really hits full circle for me.”
“In 1952, the book of Charlotte’s Web was released,” noted DJT’s Artistic Director Daniel Sheridan. “It is a story that has stood the test of time.  Junior Theatre started in 1951 and we like to think we are a children’s theatre that has stood the test of time too.  Hopefully we have been radiant and humble along the way, just like Wilbur and Charlotte.”
Founded in 1951, Davenport Junior Theatre is the nation’s second-oldest children’s theatre.  Classes and camps are offered year-round in theatre and dance for students ages three to eighteen. Classes are as varied as acting, improvisation, broadway, puppetry and theatrical design. In the quickly-growing dance division – which is now six years old – young dancers learn poise and confidence while having fun and making friends in a non-competitive dance environment.  Summers see a myriad of camps and other activities for kids of all ages.  Through all these opportunities, DJT prepares kids for a lifetime of success, no matter what path their lives may take.
