Description
Walcott School, a school in the Davenport Community School District serving elementary and intermediate students in the Walcott and rural Davenport area, will have a ribbon cutting on Friday, December 2nd at noon to celebrate an expansion.
Walcott, Iowa has had a school since William Walcott donated $500 in 1855 for the construction of a school building. Due to a growing population, a new school was constructed in 1895 and by 1921 the school served students through the tenth grade. Students completed their junior and senior years of high school at Davenport Central. The Walcott Community School District was formed in 1955 to bring together many one-room schoolhouse districts and upgrade rural education. The current building was constructed in 1956. In 1965, the Walcott School District was absorbed into the Davenport Community School District. The current building serves both elementary and intermediate students, grades K-8, from Walcott and rural Davenport, with a total enrollment of 593 students and 81 staff members.
