President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Overview
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Mississippi Valley (BBBSMV) creates and supports one-to-one mentoring relationships that ignite the power and promise of youth. Our vision is that all youth achieve their full potential. The organization is seeking its next President/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).

The new leader will follow current CEO, Jay Justin, who has led the organization for 23 years and has recently resigned to transition to retirement.

The CEO is a visionary leader giving direction to the organization and upholding the organization’s philosophy and mission while achieving its strategy, annual objectives, and goals.

The CEO oversees a staff of eighteen professionals, a budget of over $1.7million, and a collection of successful, innovative programs.

The incoming CEO must have a passion for serving children and youth, along with a belief in the transformative power of mentoring. They must uphold and enhance a positive culture of teamwork and support collaboration among staff. They will build and maintain long-term relationships with stakeholders including donors and foundations, businesses, elected officials, community leaders, other nonprofits, and the media. They will be active in community outreach and external relations on behalf of Big Brothers Big Sisters and will maintain a positive and active profile.

Responsibilities of the role include strategic planning, Board of Directors collaboration, organizational development and leadership, fundraising and resource development, and oversight of finances, program deliverables, and overall marketing of the organization.

The ideal CEO will have a professional, enthusiastic, and genuine personality. They will have strong people skills effective communication skills, a capacity to build and maintain respectful and trusting relationships, and an ability to engage in productive, meaningful conversations within the community.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Facilitate the execution of the national and local organization’s vision and mission and develop strategies and objectives to continually advance them.
  • Work with the board of directors to develop a shared vision for the future of the organization.
  • Build understanding around the mission and develop appropriate objectives, goals, and long-range strategies to advance that mission.
  • Match strong operational practices with good governance practices.
  • Function as an ambassador and connector for BBBSMV and its mission, within the community, within the national federation of BBBS affiliates, and with the national BBBS of America team.
  • Work collaboratively and build strategic partnerships with key community and regional organizations with interests and missions that align with Big Brothers Big Sisters.
  • Be involved and active with the national BBBS of America team. Maintain the stature of BBBSMV to continue achieving top honors at the national level.
  • Be a positive and engaged leader of staff, creating an inclusive, transparent, and collaborative work environment.
  • Provide direction, guidance, coaching, and development to committed staff.
  • Actively engage in human resource matters, working toward a culture of high trust and collectiveness.
  • Provide leadership to all fundraising efforts and initiatives.
  • Bring a passion and commitment to fundraising efforts, functioning as “Chief Fundraiser” for the organization.
  • Identify and cultivate relationships with major philanthropic, governmental, corporate, and individual donors.
  • Lead and oversee major fundraising campaigns. Work with board committees, development consultants, and other resources to set and achieve goals for fundraising campaigns.
  • Actively partner with the Development team to plan and execute fund development and fundraising efforts.
  • Provide vision and guidance to the internal operations of the organization.
  • Oversee the development of programmatic and operational business plans and measurable objectives.
  • Oversee the organization's budgeting process and asset management activities.
  • Establish the most effective overall organization structure to achieve results and bring out the best in each team member.
  • Measure and evaluate programs, assuring their relevance and impact are connected to the organization’s mission.
  • Coach and support the senior leadership team in achieving programmatic outcomes for the organization while assuring an ongoing focus on youth and their safety.
  • Work with the Board of Directors to assist in the governance of the organization.
  • Provide the board with timely information on issues and trends, as well as the accomplishment of goals and objectives.
  • Provide guidance to various board committees/task forces.

MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITIES

The Chief Executive Officer reports to the Board of Directors.

Senior leadership staff reporting to the Chief Executive Officer are:

  • Chief Operating Officer
  • Chief Program Officer
  • Chief Engagement Officer

A total of eighteen resolute employees work at the organization, supported by hundreds of outstanding volunteers each year.

POSITION PROFILE

QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be a respected leader with the qualifications to lead a prominent, successful organization into the future.

The candidate will possess a bachelor’s degree or equivalent education in management, or a related field, and senior executive experience in an organization with a comparable budget, staff, and program size and complexity.

In addition, the ideal candidate will have a demonstrated passion for youth development and for furthering equity and inclusion.

COMPENSATION and BENEFITS

The compensation range for this position is $95,000-$125,000, plus benefits. If required, relocation assistance is available.
