Director of Nursing
Position Overview: Direct and coordinate health care activities for all residents
The Director of Nursing is responsible for the coordination of health care needs, evaluation and improvement of program services and the delivery of high-quality services through the nursing process. Ensure quality services consistent with the philosophy of the Assisted Living Community and comply with applicable state laws and regulations. Conduct all responsibilities within the Scope of Practice dictated by the state. Meet Federal and State regulations, as applicable. Provide personal care services, assistance, support, evaluation, and supervision to residents, as needed.
Essential Job Responsibilities: Resident Care
• Coordinate services to meet the health needs of the residents and promote wellness.
• Provide personal care services, assistance, support, evaluation, and supervision to residents, as needed
• Perform pre-admission assessments of potential new residents.
• Meet with every new resident and complete basic health assessment within one week of their moving into the community and update service plan within 30 days.
• Work with team to develop and update service plans for residents.
• For at-risk residents, coordinate the assistance plan, activate resources through home health and communicate with the physician and responsible party regarding issues that keep the resident at risk.
• Ensure the overall accountability for specialty units such as Dementia/Alzheimer’s units.
• Based on physician orders, guide, evaluate, perform, and supervise resident care plans including but not limited to, assessments, resident/family teaching, development and updating of residents’ plans of assistance.
• Establish and maintain resident records according to State and Federal guidelines.
• Review incident reports for completeness and follow up documentation in medical record.
Provide or coordinate educational opportunities related to health issues of interest to the residents and families (i.e. Alzheimer’s support group).
• Establish a medication plan that works for each resident so that residents can remain independent in taking medications.
• Complete 90-day medication reviews (POS-Physician Order Sheets)
• Communicate changes in resident’s overall condition to the responsible party, physician, Executive Director, and other team members.
• Assume on-call responsibilities and address medical emergencies as they arise.
• Responsible for the Quality Improvement, Safety, and OSHA programs for the nursing department.
Staffing:
• Supervise, train, and manage all nursing team members, carrying out any disciplinary action and dismissal of team members, when necessary.
• Delegate appropriate nursing tasks while retaining accountability. The functions of assessment, evaluation, and nursing judgment must not be delegated.
• Observe and document non-licensed personnel skills as indicated.
• Provide team members with in-services on health conditions related to aging, and specific to residents in assisted living, so that they can deal better with residents’ needs.
• Review medication errors and follow up with proper documentation and recommend appropriate disciplinary action.
• Responsible for the yearly evaluation of medication policies and procedures to include competency/training of nursing staff providing medications.
• Provide periodic staff meetings.
• Help ensure the overall staffing pattern of the department. Operation of Facility/Maintaining Census
• Assist in development of nursing department budget and operate nursing department within established budget guidelines.
• Market the community to prospective residents, including tours of community, telephone inquiry calls, professional contacts etc.
• Ensure compliance of OSHA-MSDS sheets and procedures, fire and safety procedures.
• Encourage socialization among residents and promote activities, assisting with activities as requested.
• Attend regularly scheduled staff meetings and in-services.
• Report on-the-job injuries to the supervisor before the end of the work shift on the day the injury occurs.
• Maintain confidentiality of verbal and written information pertaining to residents, community operations and personnel.
• Other duties as assigned.
Education, Experience and Other Requirements:
• Nursing license in the state (RN preferred)
• 3-5 years nurse management experience
• CPR certification Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
• Promote teamwork in providing services to resident.
• OSHA-MSDS sheets and procedures
• State and Federal Guidelines for Assisted Living and Dementia
• State Nurse Practice Act
• HIPAA requirements
• Ability to travel occasionally for meetings
• Ability to organize and prioritize with good attention to detail
• Excellent assessment, interpersonal and communication skills
• Interest and ability to work within a multidisciplinary team
• Intermediate knowledge of or willingness and ability to learn the computer programs used in this facility Preferred Qualifications
• Previous memory care experience
• Previous experience in senior living
• Management of large teams
